The Wolfram Research, Inc. web site describes Mathematica software in the following manner, "Mathematica seamlessly integrates a numeric and symbolic computational engine, graphics system, programming language, documentation system, and advanced connectivity to other applications." How does the site license work?
The Mathematica Licensing Agreement is a concurrent licensing agreement with Wolfram Research Inc. for use of the Mathematica software product by UF department's participating in the agreement. Software Licensing Services (SLS) manages the use and metering of these licenses. This software can only be used by UF employees and registered students on computer systems owned or leased by the University of Florida and are normally located in UF-owned facilities. All licenses are concurrent licenses. Departments joining the agreement must buy a number of licenses equal to the number of maximum users they plan to allow to use the software at one time.
Under this agreement, a "pool of licenses" is shared among the departments participating in the license. Initially, all licenses are available to all contributors to maximize the availability of licenses. However, should SLS determine that the number of licenses being used by a department exceeds the number of licenses funded by the department, the department must either reduce the number of computers accessing the software or purchase additional licenses. If the department is unable to comply, SLS reserves the right to limit access to the software based on the department's contribution or remove access to the software until the problem can be resolved.
All computers systems using the software must have access to UF's network and must be registered with Software Licensing Services. Software Licensing Services reserves the right to remove access to any computer system not registered with our service or is deemed to be operating in an adverse manner affecting the management of the Mathematica licensing server.
At present, we are supporting 25 (Class A Platform) licenses for Windows, Macintosh, OS X and Linux (X86compatibale) platforms and 5 (Class B Platforms) licenses for Solaris, HP Tru64 Unix, HP-UX IBM AIX SGIIRIX and Linux Itanium platforms. Usage outside of the University of Florida Network is not allowed.
About Restricted Home Use for Faculty
Home Use is allowed to faculty members of contributing departments participating in the agreement based on the following restrictions:
- The eligible faculty member's department must be participating in the licensing agreement. (See Participating Depts link.)
- The eligible faculty member (a faculty member, staff member, not student) must request access through their department's Licensing Manager (Department Liaison).
- The department can only authorize "Home use" to Eligible faculty based on the maximum number of licenses they are contributing funds toward.
- The software can only be installed on a computer that is: (i) owned by the Eligible Faculty Home User; (ii) normally located in the Eligible Faculty Home User’s primary personal residence; (iii) used primarily by the Eligible Faculty Home User; and (iv) used primarily for the use or support of instruction and academic research.
How to join the licensing program.
Only departments of the University of Florida can join this licensing agreement. Administration of the license and the distribution of the software and licensing keys are managed by Software Licensing Services. To join the agreement, print out the Order Form and follow the instructions within.
